Every photographer talks about that one decisive moment that forever captures something special. Something is seen and the body and mind work together to release the shutter. We as photographers sometimes do not even consciously see those little details, but with our finely tuned photographic sense know how to release the shutter at a specific moment and time, unleashing the magic. For a fashion photographer there are a lot of elements at work leading up to that one decisive moment. The model walking onto set, the flashes popping and the images appearing on screen, that moment for the most part has been created by a team and is just waiting to be captured. As a fashion/portrait photographer that moment is a culmination of hours, days and weeks in the planning.

Creating a Boutique Style Photography Business

Written by Michelle Moore
In any kind of (photography) market there are tens, if not hundreds of other shooters doing what you do, whether it's weddings, pets, or senior portraits.  Finding a way to distinguish yourself from the rest of your market, locally or nationally can be tough.  For my business, finding that one special product started from a personal preference, and turned into a way to promote my services in a new and unique way that had never been seen before in the senior portrait market.  I had been shooting fashion for a few years, and when I started to do work in the portrait world, I wanted to incorporate a makeup artist into all my services.  I did this because I noticed how much it immensely made a difference in my post-production work.  The quality straight out of camera working with a professional artist brought the quality of my work to an entirely different level than before.
Shooting architecture is always a challenge. The beauty of architecture photography is that there is a lot variety in styles and types, shapes and sizes of buildings (especially if you get to travel around the world).

The Process of Creating High Dynamic Range Images

Written by Bill Moore
I've been interested in High Dynamic Range (HDR) Photography for a while now, but have been too busy to start experimenting with it. Until recently that is. At a very basic level creating an HDR image is quite simple. It involves taking multiple, bracketed exposures of the same scene, then combining the images into a single image optimized to show the dynamic range of all of the exposures. This allows you "see" detail in the image that a single exposure just couldn't display. Sounds simple enough, but there are a few things you need to know before you start.

Light On Your Feet - Shooting On Location

Written by Tom Medvedich
When it comes to shooting on location, you have to be light on your feet; both literally and figuratively speaking. You usually can't bring a lot of gear because you need to be mobile, and things are always changing on the fly, so you need to be prepared for all possible circumstances. Whether you're at an office in Brooklyn or hanging off the edge of a boat in the Mediterranean Sea, you need to have your wits about you.

Website Design and Usability for Photographers

Written by Zach Prez
This excerpt from Photography Web Marketing Guide shows how simple design choices on your website can impact ease of use and therefore actual business results. My wife thinks I'm crazy, but I'm completely bothered by unreadable signage – the billboard with too much information to read in 2 seconds, the bumper sticker with a small font, a guy on the corner twirling a sign so quickly that I can't read it. Anything difficult to read loses an opportunity to market your message. To reference the free ebook Nonverbal Website Intelligence: http://diythemes.com/thesis/nonverbal-website-intelligence/

Written by Nikki McLeod
The start of a New Year for the wedding photographer means many things. It's usually downtime certainly for this Scottish wedding photographer! It's time for a breather, time to review the last year, and renew for the upcoming season. It's also time to remember that there has been many a lucky lady who found an engagement ring in her stocking from Santa, and is now looking for a photographer for her big day. Therefore it's best to take stock of where your business is, where it is going and what it can do for those newly engaged couples.

A Professional Photographers Income Stream

Written by Dan Bailey
What does the ideal income stream of the professional photographer look like? That's an often asked question by those who aspire to become pro photographers and who want to know what area of photography they should focus on. The answer is simple: It should look like the Amazon. No, not the place where you buy everything, I'm talking about The Amazon- the river in South America.

Long Lens Landscape Photography

Written by Sergio Ballivian
I have been using telephoto lenses for decades and my favorite use is to choose a variable zoom or fixed prime telephoto lens and shoot the amazing landscapes that I come across in my travels. What I just said is "old news" to many of those that have been doing this already. But for those of you that have not considered using telephoto lenses for capturing landscape images that go beyond the ordinary or have been "taught" that wide-angle lenses are the only way to capture the grand landscape, let me show you some examples of what you can do with only one long lens. In this case a 300mm f/4.0 prime telephoto.

Capturing the Light – Exploring Patagonia

Written by Colby Brown
When most photographers think of Patagonia, they envision rugged wild landscapes, extreme weather patterns and incredibly beautiful light. After having recently spent 3 weeks traveling throughout the Patagonian region of Southern Chile and Argentina with my wife...I can tell you that those ideas are not far from the truth.
